Is there any greater treat to yourself, after a long day, than a glass of wine?
Do we even have to ask?
Funzing visited Sam, one of our amazing hosts, who elevates that typical at home experience of one glass of wine, with her wine tastings. You get the knowledge of what you’re drinking, and three, four, five glasses of wine in the company of other curious drinkers.
Her wine tastings are perfect for anyone who enjoys a bop of alcoholic flavour post-work. If you’re remotely curious about the art of drinking you’ll find happiness at these Funzing events. For those just starting to get into wine, Sam recommends,”reading books, going to tasting events to try all the different wines, and coming to casual classes such as what we offer to just get a bit of introduction and learn more about wine, then go from there.”
So yes, you can be a nervous beginner, wide-eyed and giddy for wine, without the slightest whiff of what tannins actually are. You’ll walk away more confident in your ability to order a bottle, and you’ll savour the distinct flavours on your stained tongue. And, yes these tannin things will be explained!
Or, you can be a seasoned wine connoisseur, and you’ll come away with new knowledge–your palate refined, and your serious drinker’s swagger increased.
Before she started her journey into wine drinking, Sam associated wine with social gatherings: Family, friends, and flowing conversation, “At first, it was all about pleasure and enjoyment but when I visited Napa Valley one summer, I was going through all these vineyards, wineries, different types of wines, and I didn’t like the fact that I knew close to nothing about what I was drinking.” Sam studied, and now lives, breathes (and yes, drinks) wine for a living!
Together, Sam and PK from Fine Wines SG will teach you the lingo you need to discuss wine without sounding drunk, how to dissect a wine label, what to look out for when buying wines–and then, they’ll put your palate to the test! You won’t find two people more eager to help you start your wine-drinking journey. “We love it when our students enjoy the classes, and tell us that they learned a lot from us, and they want to join our other classes.”
On the night Funzing attended one of Sam’s wine tastings we were introduced to Italian wines. With twenty wine regions, and over 350 grape varieties, Italy, in the world of wine, is a big deal. While Sam doesn’t play favourites with her wine, she did mention she was partial to a glass of Barolo from the Piedmont region in Italy, “as this is what really made me fall in love with wine due to the complex aroma and intensity the wine was giving me.”
Sam kicked the evening off with an overview of Italy’s wine-drinking history, and then we delved into the land of the vine focusing on wines from Piedmont, Tuscany, Veneto, and Sicily. And yes, we sipped a luxurious, sneakily alcoholic drop as we learnt.
For Funzing, hearing first-hand about the wine-making process while drinking a glass boosted the flavours (we were practically hit over the head with flavour!) and added a little extra magic to the night. But, the highlight was the blind tasting. We assessed five different Italian wines arranged in a row, like a delicious police line-up, according to sight, smell, and taste.
At our end of the table we compared notes, sipped wine, cleansed our palate with a spread of cheeses, sipped more wine, and basked in the scent of syrupy cherries and spices. We voted for the most popular wine (the winner of the day was the Super Tuscan–a wine that smelt like a cigar stub, but tasted rich with velvety dark fruits). And then, to Funzing’s utmost surprise we found out we had correctly assessed all five wines, and walked away with a free wine bag!
For a truly unique wine-tasting, bubbling with personality, come to one of PK and Sam’s classes! Come with friends, or come alone–everyone is made to feel welcome, and as Sam puts it best everyone leaves with, “an awesome experience and a belly full of wine!”
